Records chiefly consist of affidavits concerning a racial disturbance at a political meeting in Cainhoy (S.C.) in which several persons were killed by gunfire. Affidavits of eyewitnesses state that a group of white Democratic Party members gathered at the Brick Church were attacked by Negroes on October 16, 1876. Another affidavit (18 October 1876) records a statement by Gabriel Crocker concerning reports that the "Negroes had sworn vengeance against the white people" and that they would have burned the village "had it not been for the presence of the men from Charleston, who were guarding the place."
